Sixteen players sealed their places in the Revora Spanish Open's last 32 on Friday night in Gandia, with home favourite David Alcaide and world No. 3 Francisco Sanchez Ruiz both needing deciding racks to get through a dramatic winners' qualification round. Konrad Juszczyszyn was the biggest casualty, beaten 9-8 by fellow Pole Tomasz Kaplan, and must survive Saturday's losers' qualification to keep his tournament alive.

## Alcaide, Sanchez Ruiz survive hill-hill finishes

The two Spaniards carrying home hopes both had to win the last rack of the night. Alcaide, who had conceded just four racks in two Thursday wins, beat countryman Raul Martin Muela 9-4 in the morning session before Germany's Dennis Laszkowski pushed him all the way in qualification — Alcaide closing out 9-8.

Sanchez Ruiz's evening was tighter still. He ended Radoslaw Babica's unbeaten run 9-6 in the 10:45 tie of the day, then was dragged to a decider by the Czech Petr Urban before prevailing 9-8.

## The Qatar travellers go 7-1

The three men who arrived from the World Cup in Doha produced a 7-1 record on the day. Wojciech Szewczyk, the Euro Tour rankings leader and a Thursday semi-finalist in Qatar, won three times — over Niklas Dohr, a hill-hill 9-8 against Slovakia's Timothei Furko, and Walter Laikre in qualification — while fellow semi-finalist Daniel Macioł conceded four racks in three matches, beating Delmon Khwaja, Sky van den Berg and Norway's Roger Lysholm.

Juszczyszyn, who won twice on Thursday after an overnight flight, added a 9-4 win over Spain's Renzo Sierra but then ran into compatriot Tomasz Kaplan in the qualification round and fell 9-8. He returns at 09:00 Saturday for losers' qualification, one match from the last 32.

## Defending champion untroubled

Oliver Szolnoki has still not lost a match in Gandia. The Hungarian, who won this event at the same venue 11 months ago, whitewashed Belgium's Johny Vanrijkel 9-0 in the late-morning session and closed his day 9-4 over Spain's Alvaro Lamapereira Lage.

## The losers' side toll

Friday's losers'-bracket rounds cut deep into the 165-man field. Among the players eliminated were Belgium's Johny Vanrijkel, Bosnia's Aleksa Vrhovac, Germany's Stefan Kasper and Spain's Raul Martin Muela. Szymon Kural, the 2025 World Championship runner-up, was also beaten — 9-6 by Croatia's Ivica Putnik in qualification — and like Juszczyszyn must come through Saturday's losers' round to reach the last 32.

The late 21:30 losers' round filled Saturday's qualification card and ended the week for some familiar names. Poland's Radoslaw Babica — beaten by Sanchez Ruiz in the afternoon — went out 9-7 to Ukraine's Dmytro Skorokhodov, while Germany's Tobias Bongers fell 9-8 to Spain's Jonas Souto. The Netherlands' Yannick Pongers survived a deciding rack, 9-8 over Juan Carlos Exposito, and Poland's Hubert Lopotko edged Switzerland's Dimitri Jungo 9-8.

Also through to Saturday: Turkey's Ramazan Dincer, the Netherlands' Mika van Berkel, Croatia's Roberto Bartol and Poland's Mariusz Skoneczny.

## Women's event opens — Filler on track

Top seed Pia Filler began her week with a 7-4 win over Norway's Ine Helvik as the 52-player women's event opened Friday. Filler, who holds a 230-point lead at the top of the women's ranking, is one win from the last-16 knockout.

Joining her on the winners' side are Germany's Ina Kaplan and Miriam Steiner, Poland's Oliwia Zalewska and Monika Zabek, Spain's Silvia Lopez Fibla and Maria-Teresa Ropero, Belgium's Kamila Khodjaeva, Ukraine's Daria Siranchuk, Slovenia's Ana Gradišnik, Poland's Oktawia Brodecka, Sweden's Linnéa Hjalmarström, France's Marion Jude, China's Jiang Teng, the Netherlands' Jolien Schuurman and Austria's Sandra Baumgartner.

## Saturday in Gandia

The men's last-32 field is completed by the 09:00 losers' qualification — 16 matches pairing Friday's winners'-bracket casualties, Juszczyszyn and Kural among them, against the survivors of losers' round five. Single elimination, race-to-11, begins at 12:00, with the last-16 round at 21:00.

The women play winners' qualification at 11:00 and reach their own last 16 at 19:00. Sunday brings quarter-finals (10:00), semi-finals (13:00 and 17:00) and the 20:00 finals at the €60,700 event.
