## Alcaide untroubled on home ground

Spain's leading player barely put a foot wrong on day one. Alcaide whitewashed fellow Spaniard David Prieto 9-0 in the 09:00 opening session on table 19, then returned for the 16:00 slot to beat Poland's Dominik Regieli 9-4 on table 1.

The wins put him straight into Friday's winners' round two, where a second consecutive home tie awaits against Raul Martin Muela at 09:00. Martin Muela reached the same point by beating Turkey's Ramazan Dincer 9-4.

## Sanchez Ruiz and Juszczyszyn go through

World No. 3 Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, another Spaniard in the field, had a first-round walkover before seeing off Slovenia's Maj Badovinac 9-4 on table 1 in the 17:45 session. Poland's Radoslaw Babica, a 9-4 winner over Yannick Pongers, is Friday's opponent.

Juszczyszyn had the tighter path. The Pole beat Czech Matous Vlk 9-3 in round one, then was pushed to a decider by Germany's Tobias Bongers before closing out a 9-8 hill-hill win on table 2. Bongers stayed alive on the losers' side, beating Michael Seitz 9-1 later in the evening.

## Szewczyk and Macioł start on Friday

The tour's two biggest Qatar World Cup finishers arrive late. Szewczyk, who leads the Euro Tour ranking, and Macioł both played in Thursday's World Cup semi-finals in Doha — a schedule confirmed by the EPBF — and received first-round walkovers in Gandia.

Both enter Friday's winners' round one at 14:15 local: Szewczyk meets Germany's Niklas Dohr, while Macioł faces Syria's Delmon Khwaja, a hill-hill winner over Marcin Kwiecień in the opening round.

## Also of note on day one

- Hungary's Oliver Szolnoki needed the deciding rack to beat Slovenia's Maks Benko 9-8 after a comfortable 9-5 opening win over France's Pascal Enfroy.
- Dutchman Marc Bijsterbosch won twice, 9-5 over Paul Vilches-Pardo and 9-4 over Kai Kraft, and meets compatriot Mika van Berkel on Friday.
- The evening losers'-bracket rounds were still completing at the snapshot time; among the players eliminated were Vietnam's Tran Xuan Duc and Germany's Jonas-Kvalsund Hansen.

## Friday in Gandia

Winners' round two opens at 09:00 local, with Alcaide v Martin Muela, Juszczyszyn v Renzo Sierra and Poland's Kacper Konkel against Sweden's Walter Laikre among the early ties. Szewczyk and Macioł join at 14:15.

The 52-player women's event begins the same day, race-to-7 in the double-elimination phase. Top seed Pia Filler — who holds a 230-point lead at the top of the ranking — enters the winners' side at 16:00 local.
